Au Lac House, French Quarter Hanoi

Au Lac House is a delightful Vietnamese cuisine restaurant in the heart of Hanoi's French Quarter just outside of the Hoan Kiem District at the intersection of Tran Hung Dao and Han Thuyen.  Phone: +84 4 39333533
I have three little globetrotting kids I'm raising in traditional dresses and backpacks, and so I need three things from a night out in a sit-down restaurant:
1.  Refined and relaxed atmosphere but still kid friendly.
2.  Cool decor and cultural ambiance. (It's educational... I'm a teacher after all)
3.  Yummy food I can't get on the street.

The Au Lac House has all three!
Au Lac House sits in an old French colonial style mansion that must have been one sweet residence at some point.  Vaulted ceilings and wide sweeping porches and balconies, perfect candlelight and marbled floors and a big staircase in the middle that makes it still feel like you'revisiting the home of an old family member.  Quaint and cool.
There was an elegance to it.  Unlike many other Asian cities, the Vietnamese of Hanoi still perfect the art and aesthetic of eating in style.  The drinks, the staff, the presentation, everything catered to the customer.
Oh man...and the food!  Okay, that's maybe the most important part, isn't it?  Unlike most people, I don't take pictures of the dishes laid before me, but suffice to say, from the fresh veggies spiced up to excite or the crazy curry sauces or the ethnic Vietnamese recommendations from the helpful maitre d'... it was totally delicious.
So... if you're traveling through Hanoi and you're looking for a great night out, with or without kids, the Au Lac House was the perfect end to a great day.  Kind of spendy, but worth it.  Enjoy!
