California State of Mind

"I've seen all the movie stars in their fancy cars and their limousines.  Been high in the Rockies under the evergreens.  I know what I'm needin' and I don't want to waste more time..."  -Billy Joel, New York State of Mind.

There's nothing like California to conjure up a dream.  As a native Oregonian, no other western state has this effect on me.  Not rustic Idaho nor wide open Montana nor desolate Nevada... California is something different.  A Never, Neverland... a Fairy Tale.  A separate reality unto itself.

It has nothing to do with the shallow hopes of Hollywood's fame and glory or the flights of fancy of vacuous Silicon Valley.

No, rather it's about the stunning natural beauty of Northern California.  A beauty so rich it hits you both emotionally and intellectually.
That's not always easy for human-made art to accomplish.  As we plunge into the Redwoods, we look at two American classics: one emotional Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, the other intellectual, Arthur Miller's The Crucible.
